What Becoming an Independent Insurance Broker Has Taught Me

When people ask what the biggest difference is between being a captive agent and an independent insurance broker, my answer is always the same:
Freedom.
Not freedom for me.
Freedom for my clients.
When I became an independent broker, I thought I was simply changing companies. What I quickly realized was that I was changing the entire way I could serve people.
Here are a few lessons this journey has taught me.
1. Every Family Is Different
One company isn’t the best fit for everyone.
Some families need the lowest premium possible.
Others need better claims service.
Some need coverage for a business, rental property, classic car, or teen driver.
As an independent broker, I’m able to compare multiple carriers instead of trying to fit every client into the same box.
2. Price Matters… But Protection Matters More
I’ve learned that the cheapest policy isn’t always the least expensive.
Sometimes saving $20 a month today can cost thousands after a claim because important coverage wasn’t included.
My goal isn’t simply to save money.
It’s to make sure people understand what they’re buying.
3. Insurance Is Really About Relationships
The policy is just paper.
The relationship is what matters.
When storms come…
When accidents happen…
When life changes…
People don’t remember the policy number.
They remember who answered the phone.
4. There’s Always Something New to Learn
The insurance world changes constantly.
New coverages.
New underwriting rules.
New carriers.
New discounts.
I spend a lot of time studying because I believe my clients deserve advice that’s current, not outdated.
5. Education Is Part of My Job
One of the biggest surprises has been realizing how many people simply haven’t had insurance explained in plain English.
That’s one of the reasons I started writing these blogs.
If someone understands deductibles, liability, uninsured motorists, or homeowners coverage a little better because of something I wrote, that’s a win.
6. Serving People Feels Better Than Selling Policies
I’ve learned that the best sales strategy isn’t really a sales strategy at all.
Listen.
Ask questions.
Educate.
Help.
The right policy usually follows.
My Biggest Lesson
This journey has reminded me that insurance isn’t really about cars, houses, or businesses.
It’s about protecting dreams.
The first home.
The family car.
A new business.
A child’s future.
A lifetime of hard work.
I’m grateful every day that I get to play a small part in protecting the things that matter most.
If you’re looking for someone who believes insurance should come with education, honesty, and genuine service, I’d love the opportunity to help.
Because at the end of the day…
Insurance with Intent. Service with Soul.
